PASC FIRST FIVE YEARS
- Summer 2020 (amidst the COVID pandemic) Anthony Marcellini (independent contractor) begins conversations with Services to Enhance Potential (STEP), Brent Mikulski (CEO 2014-2024) and Terey Delisle (Director of Program Services 2021-2023), to launch an open-studio-based art and exhibitions program for adults with disabilities at STEP.
- [Anthony was the exhibitions and programs manager of the Friendship Circle Soul Studio (2018-2020), an art studio and exhibition program for adult artists with disabilities. He became aware of STEP through an exhibition they produced with the Detroit gallery Playground, featuring artwork from its former “Art in the Market” program (2014-2019), a classroom-based art program run by artist and educator Ray Ackley.]
- The program Anthony proposed was not a classroom, but a studio model, based on the progressive art studio structure. Progressive art studios are a pedagogical model, developed over 50 years ago, with an educational ethos developed to advance adults with disabilities into professional art careers, united by a goal to support independence, confidence building and unique self-directed art practices.
