Ronald Griggs

Ronald is a Detroit-based artist working out of the PASC Detroit studio. He creates mannerist-style drawings and paintings of people and animals in relationships, drawing influences from religious iconography, western European painting, Manga, mythology, and pop cultural references. Griggs images span from the traditional, such as portraiture or religious imagery, such as depictions of Madonna and Child, to more complex tableau’s featuring hybrid human animal, centaur-like forms, in often erotic poses in nature or sometimes engaging with each other in sexual acts. Even through his subjects are often drawn from references, he transforms their features into something more familiar, becoming reminiscent of the faces of Griggs’ family and friends. Whether sexually explicit or tender and heartfelt, a consistent motif in Ronald’s artwork is always love—a deep striving for connection between both the human and the non-human. The titles he gives to many of his artworks are ‘family’ further communicating the tenderness of his artworks, which focus on the caring relationships between humans and other beings.
