Tributes: Mandy Demorest, Shawn Jackson, and Bruce Rice is a survey exhibition celebrating PASC artists Mandy Demorest, Shawn Jackson, and Bruce Rice. Each of these artists creates artworks that serve as tributes or high statements of respect and admiration for everything from cartoon characters to pop cultural icons to significant landmarks. Representing the PASC Westland and Detroit Studios, Mandy, Shawn, and Bruce each emphasize strong, intricately detailed, flowing linework in their distinct styles with a confident cartoon-like illustration approach to their artwork.

Mandy is a Canton-based artist who works at the PASC Westland Studio. Mandy’s artwork heavily features the use of metallic gel pens, bringing an almost 3-D effect to her artwork. Mandy’s artwork can be defined by precise linework, a sly cartoonish style of drawing, and an almost 1970s pastel color palette. Her subject matter is pop culture, history, and sports, ranging from Disney to University of Michigan Football, to historical military generals, sometimes all represented through a geometric network, on the same page. Bridges and artworks referencing pop-culture icons, like Ozzy Osbourne or Prince.

Shawn is a Detroit-based artist who works at the PASC Detroit Studio. Shawn’s artwork is reminiscent of caricaturist artist Al Hirschfeld or cartoonist Saul Steinberg. Shawn shares these artists’ delicate linework and significant use of negative space for dramatic effect. The subjects of his artworks tend to circulate around popular culture, such as classic television shows, pop musicians, fashion and consumer culture, and classic American movies, of which he has an almost encyclopedic memory.

Bruce is a Plymouth-based artist working at the PASC Westland Studio. Bruce's practice is focused on rendering miniature drawings inspired by photographs found in magazines and large stacks of books, spending time flipping through each page to find his desired image to reference Bruce’s tastes gravitate towards subtle landscape imagery, florals, design objects, and figures. Although his drawings are tiny, he often combines a series of illustrations to create a composition reminiscent of art collages. In his recent series, he has been compiling dedication to deceased cartoon voice-over actors, featuring the actor’s name on a tombstone surrounded by minute drawings of all the characters they voiced

Launched in 2021, PASC is the first progressive art and design studio and exhibition program in Detroit and Wayne County dedicated to supporting artists with developmental disabilities and mental health differences to advance artistic practices and build individual careers in the art and design fields. PASC is a program of Services to Enhance Potential (STEP), a non-profit service organization founded in 1972 that provides services and support for more than 1,400 individuals with disabilities and mental health differences across Southeastern Michigan.
