Creativity takes courage.
- Henry Matisse

Despite life’s obstacles, an artist’s career grows through their dedication to daily practice. By consistently spending time in the studio, an artist creates space to experiment, take risks, and develop new ideas, without the pressure of an outside audience.  In the studio, experimentation unfolds naturally, through making and repeating marks, erasing and trying again, testing new colors, exploring different materials, working in different sizes, and making independent creative decisions.

Dedication of Time, PASC’s fifth annual exhibition at the Art Gallery at Westland City Hall, examines time and commitment as key components to artistic excellence. The show features artists who have worked out of the PASC Westland studio and is curated by two staff members who work closely with the PASC Westland artists STEP Skills Trainer Todd Stevens and PASC Art Advisor Kristi Ternes.

Daily practice does not have to look the same every day. Growth can happen slowly or unexpectedly, unfolding over time, often in surprising ways. Scott Maciejewski has spent several months developing his artwork Plains of Africa, carefully building detailed shading that shows his focus and realism. Chelsee Bosker creates densely layered compositions filled with words and images that reflect her thoughts and emotions as they flow onto the page. Susan Hudson’s Untitled (Black Gray) highlight her interests in forming shapes and words, often writing over them multiple times with India ink, pen, and marker. Derek Ellis’ Untitled (Black White Gold) draws inspiration from architectural design, using repetitive, methodical pen-and-ink lines layered in patterns that echo building plans.

Todd Stevens is a skills trainer/job coach who brings nearly twenty years of experience supporting adults with disabilities at Services to Enhance Potential in the areas of work skills, community integration, advocacy, and, most recently, art production within the Progressive Art Studio Collective. Lacking formal art training, Todd relies on his prior experience assisting artists and creators with professional methods of finishing and presenting their artwork, producing architectural renderings, and handling unique and valuable print materials, documents and oversized works. Todd studied the English language and Education at Eastern Michigan University. He is a lover of the arts, especially music and abstract media. He brings a fresh perspective to the approaches and processes of the PASC program and is continuously inspired by the invigorating enthusiasm and visions of the members he supports.

Kristi Ternes is a multi-media artist who tries to artistically collaborate whenever possible. She has worked with hundreds of artists over the years, sometimes in community settings, sometimes one on one, creating theater productions, videos, puppet shows, parades, art exhibitions, classes, and fashion shows. Kristi enjoys the messy process of discovery and has dedicated her artistic life to fanning the flame of the magic something that exists within every person. PASC artists continuously surprise and inspire her, and this show is a reflection of those feelings. Kristi has been an art advisor at PASC since 2023.

Launched in 2021, PASC is the first progressive art and design studio and exhibition program in Detroit and Wayne County dedicated to supporting artists with developmental disabilities and mental health differences to advance artistic practices and build individual careers in the art and design fields. PASC is a program of Services to Enhance Potential (STEP), a non-profit service organization founded in 1972 that provides services and support for more than 1,400 individuals with disabilities and mental health differences across Southeastern Michigan.
