PASC presents Faces: Alsendoe Owens and James Tischler, a two-person survey exhibition featuring a new series of artworks by each artist. Both Alsendoe and James are united by bold, layered approaches to portraiture defined by expressive mark-making and vivid color. Owens and Tischler expand the language of portraiture by reimagining the face as a site of transformation, where faces emerge through accumulations of gesture, repetition, and form. Both artists work quickly on many pieces at once, using an additive process where paint is layered over time. Their paintings begin with references from art history, to photography, to anime, but transform into unique representations. In addition to both artists’ large works on canvas, this exhibit will also feature smaller works on paper by each artist.

Alsendoe Owens is a Detroit-based artist working out of the PASC Detroit studio. He is known for his rapid and prolific practice, where he works on multiple artworks quickly and confidently. His compositions often begin with energetic gestural linework in pencil or marker, working across various mediums such as acrylic, India ink, pencil, and watercolor. Alsendoe builds upon bold, contrasting colors following the volume and shadows of each form. Through layered brushstrokes, his artworks become almost self-referential, like portraits of the artist. His subjects range from portraiture to ancient sculptures, animals, and artifacts, reflecting a deep engagement with both observation and imagination. Selected exhibitions: Detroit Artist Market, Detroit, MI (2025); University of Michigan, Institute for the Humanities, Ann Arbor, MI (2025); MOCAD, Detroit, MI (2023); The Scarab Club, Detroit, MI (2021). Outsider Art Fair with PASC, NYC, New York (2025/2026); Open Invitational Art Fair, Miami, FL (2024); NADA, Miami, FL (2024). His artwork is in the permanent collection of Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI.

James Tischler is a Riverview-based artist who works out of the PASC Southgate studio. James’ artwork is defined by large gestures and quick, definitive marks. He often works with acrylic on large-scale paintings, and with pencil, ink, and watercolor on smaller mixed media artworks. James combines organic forms with layered lines, embedding abstracted facial features into what he calls “Networks”. Within these forms, James inserts eyes with long lashes and teeth into his paintings. His subject matter ranges from portraiture to objects in an expressive, abstracted style often influenced by pop culture, anime, and carnivals. These “networks” echo the motion of carnival rides he enjoys, including the Sizzler, Skater Ride, Yo-Yo, Mind Blaster, Spin A Tron, Wipeout, Sky Screamer, and Wave Swingers. Selected exhibitions: PASC Detroit Gallery, Detroit, MI (2025, 2024); and PASC Southgate Gallery, Southgate, MI (2025, 2024). Outsider Art Fair, NYC, New York (2026); and NADA with White Columns Gallery, Miami, FL (2024).
